Getting to Pune
Pune airport has limited direct flights, so the easiest way to get there is hiring a car & driver from Mumbai airport or a Domestic flight from New Delhi / Bangalore.
Please look into luggage restrictions and security rules, if you are planning to fly Domestic. Check the Logistics section for more info
You can book an inter-city uber from Mumbai - Pune
We will also be updating the website with some local travel companies that you can hire a car from. Stay tuned!
At Mumbai Airport
-
It's a long walk from the airplane to immigration. You will have to fill out a customs form before immigration(Keep a pen handy).
-
Once you get through immigration, you will pick up your luggage at the carousel, past the duty free. Make sure to grab a trolley for your luggage, they are free. Due to the large volume of bags they sometimes set aside bags so the carousel doesn't overflow, so check near the carousel for your bag as well
-
Last is customs. If you have nothing to declare, go through the "green channel" Any carry-on luggage/bags that are marked will be scanned
-
If you need Wi-Fi at the airport, go to a Wi-Fi kiosk for a code(There's one near the luggage carousels). You get 1 hour of free airport Wi-Fi
-
Always ask someone for help if you are lost. Signage is not great, but people are very helpful
-
Unlike U.S. airports people who don't have a ticket cannot enter the airport so if you have a driver/uber booked they will have to meet you outside the airport Terminal or at the parking
Stay in Pune
If you have RSVP'd yes to needing a room, we will have one booked for you at one of the event venues (Hyatt Pune or Turf Club). Check in on 15th Jan and check out on the 18th. If you plan to stay in Pune before or after and would like to stay in the same hotel, please reach out to us first as we might be able to get you a discounted rate.

Communication
Some options for calling & data while travelling
-
Physical sim card at Mumbai airport
-
E-sim card which cost about $30 for 10GB of Data & $45 for unlimited data (Airolo).
-
International Roaming from your US service provider($100/month unlimited data). Some Credit Cards like Chase Sapphire and Capitol One offer free international roaming benefits
We also recommend downloading Whatsapp as it can be used over Wi-Fi and is an easy form of communication with your driver/other folks in India
Payments
If you have a credit card that has no international fees you can use that in most places, otherwise cash is king. We recommend keeping $200-$250 or 15000-20000 rupees
cash per family.
If you don't want to keep cash on hand, you can download a UPI app called Cheq or Mony that is specifically for foreign citizens to make payments through your phone. You will need to verify your documents in person once you land, but after that it will be fairly easy to link your credit card and use your phone for payments anywhere. Even street food vendors accept digital UPI payments
General Health
It's best to mask up during the long flight to avoid catching any infections. Wash your hands regularly, especially before you eat. If you have a sensitive stomach, it's best to only drink bottled water while travelling. Avoid ice in your drinks. Stick to cooked foods at least initially(street food should be okay as long as it is cooked). Yogurt and probiotics are always a good way to acclimate your gut.
India has a lot of dust & pollution, especially Mumbai, so it's best to wear a mask when outdoors. If you travel by Auto-Rickshaw, definitely wear a mask
Emergency
It's always good to get a COVID booster & flu shot before travelling. Please, obtain travel insurance ahead of the trip. There are many carriers and they usually cost less than $100 per trip
The emergency number in India is 112. You should also be aware of the nearest hospital in the event of a non-emergency medical event. .
Please contact someone in Nidhi's family if you are in Pune and have an emergency
